Magnetic filtration for cleaner, protected heating systems

IVAR DIRTSTOP® magnetic filters help remove ferrous and other circulating impurities from heating systems, helping protect boilers, heat pumps, pumps and other system components. Choose from compact DIRTSTOP® MINI and EASY models or high-capacity DIRTSTOP® XL magnetic dirt separators.

IVAR DIRTSTOP® magnetic filters and dirt separators

Corrosion within a heating system can release ferrous particles into the circulating water, while limescale and other non-magnetic impurities may also be present. These contaminants can accumulate in restricted passages, heat exchangers and circulation pumps, contributing to blockages, noise and reduced system performance.

IVAR DIRTSTOP® magnetic dirt separators combine magnetic and mechanical filtration to capture circulating impurities and help keep heating systems in good condition. The range includes compact solutions for domestic installations together with higher-capacity models for systems requiring greater flow and dirt-separation performance.

Which IVAR magnetic filter is right for the system?

Magnetic and mechanical heating system protection

Capture ferrous debris

Powerful magnets help capture iron and other ferrous particles released through corrosion of metallic system components, preventing them from continuing to circulate through the heating system.

Remove other impurities

Mechanical filtration works alongside magnetic separation to help capture non-magnetic contamination that may otherwise collect in narrow waterways and vulnerable components.

Support system performance

Removing circulating contaminants helps protect heat exchangers, pumps and other components from the build-up of debris and supports reliable long-term system operation.

DIRTSTOP® XL triple filtering action

DIRTSTOP® XL combines three separation methods. A cyclonic insert first separates non-ferrous impurities, while dual neodymium magnets capture ferrous particles and a mesh strainer provides further mechanical filtration.

The swivelling design allows the connections to be installed vertically, horizontally or at an angle, while the larger collection chamber reduces the frequency at which accumulated contaminants need to be discharged. XL models are available with either male or female connections in 3/4″, 1″ and 1 1/4″ sizes.

Designed for straightforward maintenance

DIRTSTOP® products are designed so that collected dirt can be removed as part of routine heating-system maintenance. Regular cleaning helps maintain filtration performance and removes accumulated contaminants from the system.

DIRTSTOP® XL can be routinely flushed through its drain valve without draining down the complete heating system, while its removable components allow more thorough periodic cleaning when required.

Magnetic filter FAQs

What does a magnetic filter do in a heating system?

A magnetic filter captures ferrous particles produced by corrosion within heating-system components. IVAR DIRTSTOP® products also use mechanical separation or filtration to help remove non-magnetic impurities from the circulating water.

Where should a magnetic dirt separator be installed?

IVAR specifies DIRTSTOP® XL for installation on the heating-system return line near the heat generator, allowing contaminants to be removed before the water returns to the boiler or heat pump.

What is the difference between DIRTSTOP® EASY, MINI and XL?

DIRTSTOP® MINI is the ultracompact option for space-restricted installations, while EASY provides an orientable dual-filtration solution with 22 mm UK connections. DIRTSTOP® XL provides higher-capacity triple filtering action using cyclone separation, dual magnets and mechanical filtration.

Can IVAR magnetic filters be used with heat pumps?

Yes. IVAR identifies DIRTSTOP® EASY for systems supplied by boilers, heat pumps and other heat generators, while the high flow capability of DIRTSTOP® XL also makes it suitable for heat-pump systems.
